Understanding CFM and Duct Airflow
Airflow calculations connect equipment sizing to comfort. This guide explains how CFM targets and duct velocity checks fit together.
CFM is a delivery target
CFM describes how much air moves through the system. It depends on equipment needs, duct design, static pressure, and balancing.
CFM per ton is a planning assumption
Common CFM-per-ton values are useful starting points, but they are not universal requirements. System type, latent load, and manufacturer data can change the target.
Duct area controls velocity
For a given airflow, smaller duct area raises velocity. That can affect noise, pressure drop, and balancing.
Use results as a check, not final design
Measured static pressure, duct layout, fittings, and equipment tables remain important before final decisions.
