Drain Slope Explained
Drain slope calculations are simple mathematically, but layout decisions still depend on pipe size, fixtures, and code requirements.
Slope per foot becomes total fall
The core math multiplies horizontal run by slope in inches per foot. A 24 ft run at 1/4 in per ft needs about 6 inches of total fall.
Measure horizontal run
Use horizontal run length for the calculation. Measuring along a diagonal pipe can overstate required fall.
Slope can be too flat or too steep
Insufficient slope can leave solids behind, while excessive slope may separate water from solids in some drainage layouts.
Code controls final layout
Treat the calculator as a planning check and verify final slope, pipe diameter, and fixture requirements locally.
